Colette Brannigan - Mosaic and mixed media sculptures
The art of mosaic brings to mind ancient history. It was used in the floor decorations of grand Roman villas and on the rich walls and ceilings of Byzantine churches. Mosaics depict the Gods and mythological figures of antiquity. A significant body of mosaic in England has been revealed as the result of archaeological excavations of Roman sites.
Although it is occasionally used as a decorative medium, and a handful of designer-makers use it as their main technique, the art form has been largely forgotten, and the potential of mosaic as an original medium is little explored. The work of Colette Brannigan is contributing significantly to a renaissance of interest in this versatile and expressive material.
